RICHMOND, VA- Today, on the second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s reversal of the Dobbs decision, Senator Lashrecse Aird (D-Petersburg) released the following statement:

“Two years ago today, Trump's Supreme Court stripped away the constitutionally protected reproductive rights of hundreds of millions of Americans with their decision to reverse the Dobbs decision. Since then we have seen politicians hostile to reproductive rights continue their attacks to rob people of their power to control their bodies and personal health care decisions with restrictive bans across the country. Here in Virginia, Governor Youngkin and Republicans in the legislature utilized this decision as an opportunity to propose a 15-week ban in 2023 -- a decision which was met with immense pushback and first defeated at the legislative level, and then once again at the ballot box with my election and Democrats regaining majorities in the General Assembly.

Today abortion is legal in Virginia making it a lone bastion of reproductive freedom in the South. Yet, I can’t celebrate because women from around the country are fleeing their home states to Virginia for care they should legally and safely have access to where they are. The last two years continue to demonstrate that access to reproductive healthcare is intrinsically linked to economic vitality, housing access, educational attainment, and an individual's overall well-being.

Two years ago our country may have taken a step backwards today, but that will never stop us from fighting to move forward tomorrow.”

While serving in the House of Delegates, Lashrecse Aird demonstrated a capacity for pragmatic progressivism – championing education issues, criminal justice reform, reproductive healthcare access, and economic development.  With a willingness to reach across the aisle and work bipartisan to get things done,  now Senator Aird has a proven track record of legislative successes at the State Capitol.
